When a business is looking for solutions for their phone service, a PBX phone service may be offered. In order to make the best decision, the small business will need to learn what a PBX is and what it can do for the company. A PBX is the cornerstone for business operations and will need to be decided upon with care. Without the phone system and the arms of the company that rely on that phone system, a company can move from flourishing to dead in the water with the click of the phone.
• Know the term. PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. This term describes a telephone exchange that is set up just for the company. At the heart of these exchanges are the "extensions" so common in the business setting. An extension is simply a branch off of the main PBX phone system.
• Know the methodology. The PBX system is a foundation system of phone lines. It integrates the small business phone needs by combining the usage of fax, telephones, modem and other forms of phone communication within one system.
• Know the products. There are two forms of PBX. The virtual and the hosted. The hosted PBX small business phone systems are most often provided by the phone company using the equipment provided through the contract between the phone company and the small business. The virtual PBX system, however, is just that, virtual. With no hard lines or software with which to deal.
When a new small business is setting up office, they will need to make sure that the phone service chosen is one that will provide the highest quality calls and services for the company. Fax machines, modems, Internet access and land lines are all run through a PBX system. The company will have to choose between the available systems and between a virtual and hosted PBX.
